HVDC Power Transmission Model

The HVDC or High voltage direct current power transmission comprises rectifiers and inverters for converting ac to dc and then dc to ac. The generation and distribution are still done by alternating current. Let’s understand the HVDC transmission model:

  • Generation: Alternator generates AC
  • Step up transformer: Voltages are stepped up for improving efficiency and reducing losses for longer distances.
  • Rectifier: 3 phase rectifiers are used for converting ac to dc.
  • Transmission: Conductors are used for carrying direct current at longer distances.
  • Inverters: They take dc and convert it back to dc
  • Step down transformers: Stepping voltages for local distribution and sub-transmissions.
