Nuclear Power Generation refers to the generation of electric power from nuclear energy. The nuclear power station is the generating station in which nuclear energy is converted into electrical energy.
In a nuclear power station, heavy elements such as Uranium (U235) or Thorium (Th232) are subjected to the nuclear fission process. Nuclear fission refers to the breaking up of nuclei of heavy atoms into two nearly equal parts with the release of a huge amount of energy. The nuclear fission process is carried out in a special apparatus known as a reactor. As a result of the fission process heat energy is released. This heat energy is utilized in raising steam at high temperatures and pressure. The steam generator is used to run the steam turbine which then converts steam energy into mechanical energy. The turbine is synchronized with the alternator and it drives the alternator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
