What are some advantages of Using Short-Pitched Windings in Alternator

Short-pitched windings in alternators offer several advantages that contribute to improved performance and efficiency.

Although there are many advantages, but major two advantages for using short pitched windings are:

  1. Reduced Harmonics resulting in sinusoidal waveform: Short-pitched windings help in reducing the harmonics in the generated voltage waveform. Harmonics can lead to increased losses, overheating, and poor power quality. By short-pitching the windings, the distribution of the winding coils is modified to minimize the impact of harmonics.
  2. Less copper requirement: Overhang in which no EMF is produced is reduced in length, as a result of this less copper is required.
