Undesired tripping, also known as false tripping, occurs when a relay unnecessarily trips due to a fault outside its designated protection zone or in the absence of any fault. This situation may arise when the protective system is configured with overly high sensitivity. This type of operation can result in unnecessary load outages, such as on a radial circuit, or lead to overloading of neighboring lines within a network. In certain instances, the inconvenience caused by unnecessary tripping may not result in significant damage or overloading. However, in more critical scenarios, where a vital line experiences a false trip, it can trigger cascading outages with severe consequences.
