Why Turbo Alternators use Non-salient Poles

A turbo generator is an electric generator connected to the shaft of a steam turbine or gas turbine for the generation of electric power.

  • Turbo alternators run at very high speeds and for such high speeds it is difficult to build a salient pole construction that is strong enough to withstand centrifugal forces.
  • Salient pole rotors have large winding losses at high speeds.

The figure below illustrates the basic difference between salient and non-salient pole type construction.
